Fluid reflections
Love can be a space of freedom—but for many, it mirrors society’s demands. In LGBTQ+ relationships, external pressure constantly shapes, distorts, and challenges identity, creating tension between selfhood and conformity. This image captures a power struggle not only between lovers, but between the self and the world: how can love fully bloom when parts of one’s identity must remain hidden?
This photoshoot explores power dynamics within LGBTQ+ relationships through the lens of self-identity and societal expectation. Two non-binary figures embody this negotiation. One is bound in fabric, symbolizing the restrictive force of binary gender norms and the suffocating pressure to conform. The other holds a mirror mask, representing the fractured space between self-perception and social visibility identity as something both reflected and concealed.
Through contrasts of light and shadow, the work highlights the tension between visibility and invisibility. It critiques how societal expectations shape not only individual authenticity, but also power imbalances within intimate relationships, where those more secure in their identity often hold greater agency, and those still negotiating acceptance are left more vulnerable.
